Western Samoa Country InformationSamoa, officially the Independent State of Samoa, formerly known as Western Samoa and German Samoa, is a country governing the western part of the Samoan Islands in the South Pacific Ocean. It became independent from New Zealand in 1962. The population is estimated at 179000 with a GDP of $1.049 billion. New Zealand occupied the German protectorate of Western Samoa at the outbreak of World War I in 1914. It continued to administer the islands as a mandate and then as a trust territory until 1962, when the islands became the first Polynesian nation to reestablish independence in the 20th century. The country dropped the "Western" from its name in 1997. Trademarks are assigned through the Industrial Property, Justice Department, Patents, Trade Marks and Companies Section, Registrar of Patents, Trade Marks and Industrial Designs. Western Samoa is not a member of the Madrid Protocol. A trademark is valid for 10 years and may be renewed for further periods of 10 years each. |
