Guatemala Country Information

Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. The population is estimated at 13,276,000 with a GDP of $67.81 billion.

The Mayan civilization flourished in Guatemala and surrounding regions during the first millennium A.D. After almost three centuries as a Spanish colony, Guatemala won its independence in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a variety of military and civilian governments, as well as a 36-year guerrilla war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the conflict, which had left more than 100,000 people dead and had created, by some estimates, some 1 million refugees.

Trademarks are assigned through the Registry of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Economic Affairs. Guatemala is not a member of the Madrid Protocol. A trademark is valid for 10 years and may be renewed for further periods of 10 years each.
